When you just don't wanna

“Quack, quack–quack, quack” is all I heard. I was sitting in the massive lecture of Physics 101 and not a single word was sinking in from the duck of a professor quacking up front. I hated this class, but it was a requirement if I was ever to become a veterinarian. I loved all my other classes, anatomy, zoology, even calculus! But physics was one of the few subjects I absolutely hated. Of the few things that stuck with me is Newton’s first Law of Physics. An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion and I forget the rest.


I live in Seattle. It grey, it’s dark and gloomy for what seems about 9 out of 12 months of the year. It’s like living under a wet drippy nose that never clears up. So for many Seattleites we retreat. We retreat to our nice warm and dry dens where we cuddle up with our ipads, iphones and maybe t.v. still. We don’t leave our caves until the weather gets to about 50 degrees and sunny and then all hell breaks lose and everyone is out and about and happy.


Problem is getting out of my cave! It’s dark, it’s cold, it wet! Wah! There’s dance class at 7? Will that require me to go out again? Uh, fuhgeddaboudit! I’m an object at rest and I’m staying at rest! Yeah, call me a wuss. I don’t care. I have my fuzzy pants on, a fuzzy dog at my feet and a purring cat on my lap, life is good.



I teach class on Monday nights at 6. Fortunately, it’s early enough for me to not have time to settle in at home. I’m an object in motion and I’m staying in motion. Class attendance varies month to month and week to week. However, one trend I’ve noticed regardless, is that on those dark, rainy gloomy days I see less students. It’s not just my class I notice this in. It’s all classes! You see I dance/exercise every day! Again an object in motion stays in motion! I go to group classes because the energy of a group helps keep me motivated. Karate, yoga, hiphop, aerial, bollywood, African, you name it I’ve done it. Diversity and new challenges are what keeps me from settling in and staying at rest.


I self proclaim myself queen of excuses. My husband can attest that! I ate too much, I’ll just make it up tomorrow, I can’t find my shoes, I have to fold laundry…okay that’s a lie I would NEVER say that! Every Tuesday before ballet, I’m trying to find excuses not to go. Ballet is hard. I suck. I don’t want to go! I’m pacing, running around the house looking for my shoes, my jacket, a piece of chocolate, I’m in motion now and so I grudgingly put on my shoes and head out the door. 2 hours later I’m riding high on a post workout euphoria.


Some days are super easy, that post work out bliss carries over and I’m excited about class. It’s the one thing I’m looking forward to at the end of my day. Other days, I just don’t wanna go. We all have different ways of motivating ourselves to go exercise and it takes time to figure out what that is for each individual. For me, it’s never the same. Some days I’m motivated by the complexity of the class, other times by the group, and sometimes it’s by how tight my pants feel. However, the one thing I’ve learned is that I did learn something from my first year physics class and that is that this duck is going to stay in motion!
